SUMMARY:Sue Shapiro
DESCRIPTION:\nCeramics, handbuilt\n\n\n\nARTIST BIO\n\n\n\nSue Shapiro received a Bachelors of Fine Art from Massachusetts College of Art. Following college, she apprenticed with Master Potters Michael Cohen and Harriet Goodwin. The apprenticeship taught her how to be a professional clay artist and support herself as a working artist with what she loved to do. In 1981, she was awarded an Apprentice Fellowship in Crafts Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The grant allowed her time to continue to hone her craft and establish a pottery studio.\n\n\n\nIn 1982, Sue established SMS Pottery in St. Petersburg. Within a few years she was represented by American Craft Galleries throughout the United States. Currently, she shows her clay work at SHAPIRO’S Gallery, a family-owned business in downtown St. Petersburg.\n\n\n\nARTIST STATEMENT \n\n\n\nI work with a mid-range red stoneware clay. Most of my work is handbuilt from slabs of clay or extruded forms. I also use the potter’s wheel to form functional mugs and bowls. Early inspirations continuing to influence my work are tile work and carvings from ancient cultures, the geometric patterns found in Native American art, stylized art deco designs, midcentury modern designs, and contemporary architecture.\n\n\n\nI want my clay work to bring joy to your home and life. I hope my sculptural work adds interest and harmony to a space in your home and that my functional clay pieces get used and enjoyed, becoming part of your everyday life.\n
