Kevin Knittel was born and raised in the Detroit, Michigan area. He attended Arizona State University and graduated in 1985. He is a self-taught artist with an interest in a variety of mediums including painting, ceramics, sculpture, and mixed media.
His focus on mixed media evolved from a love of papermaking where he was drawn to both casting and sheet forming, but he accomplished papermaking without the use of machinery or traditional methods. Kevin forms paper by hand-pouring to cast in handmade molds and extracting the water with a sponge without the use of presses or vats. Finishing treatments of his current work include cementitious coatings and metal oxide patinas and paired with metal and wood.
Recently, the Tampa Museum of Art purchased Kevin’s art for its Permanent Collection. He has won many awards including Gasparilla Festival of the Arts and CraftArt Festival.
