Richard Avery

Ceramics on wheel

ARTIST BIO

Richard Avery is a ceramist originally from West Babylon, New York. He carried his pottery production with him when he moved to St. Petersburg a few years ago.

The dynamic quality of wheel throwing made Richard a functional potter. He loves the idea of functional pottery, that something handmade might become a part of someone’s everyday life. The clay body he uses primarily fires at mid-range, but he also enjoys the processes of raku, soda firing and gas reduction firing.

Richard finds the workable quality of clay allows the greatest expression of who he is at any point in time as an artist. He views himself as a co-creator with clay, glaze, and fire, not as a manipulator. The art of making a successful pot is the coalescence of so many disparate parts that produce the whole.

In 2017, Richard was selected as an Emerging Florida Artist by Florida CraftArt. He was a featured artist for several years by Trinity Spotlight on the Arts in Atlanta.

Richard’s artwork is food safe, oven safe, dishwasher safe and microwaveable. It is recommended that you allow it to preheat in the oven as the oven preheats.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I believe the gift of any potter is the ability to work with, to be affected by, and to honor the great history of pottery and ceramic work whilst making my own work. Being a potter is a never-ending journey. I continually learn and evolve as a potter. Inspiration strikes me through other potters, formal elements of pottery, and
