ARTIST BIO

Susan Lumsden has surrounded herself with texture and color since discovering the sewing machine at age five.

Today, more than six decades later, her focus is on surface design and fabrication. Creating imagery begins with drawings of Florida life – flora, fauna, and human interaction. The drawings become linocuts or silkscreens which beget printed imagery on fabric. Each allows the imagery to be repeated and incorporated into stories.

After many years of traveling as an itinerant artist, earning four national and numerous regional awards, Susan is staying closer to home. She is creating one-of-a-kind fabrics and a limited amount of practical items, like purses, pillow tops and tea towels. She is known for her rich colorizations, variegated textures, and high level of insouciance. Her quilts are sought after and found in public, corporate and private collections. She is a skilled workshop instructor and resides in Brooksville.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Our world needs some attention. For too long we have allowed profits to take priority over the sustainability of the place we live.

When one looks closely at the true wonders around us, one gains respect for its astounding perfection. Perhaps my work, celebrating the majesty of the natural world, will draw in your attention and help you to see. I focus primarily on the flora and fauna of native Florida.

By using linocuts I can extend my creativity beyond the immediate moment. By dyeing and printing my own fabrics, I can explore without limits. By helping the glory get some attention, perhaps we’ll save the world.
