About Kimberli
Kimberli Burns Cummings creates art that is meant to be touched and used – to serve the homes in which her pieces hold a special place. Her ceramic vessels elevate the tools of ‘women’s work,’ the nourishing of body and soul. Inspired by the verdant and often ecstatic flora of Florida, her energy and joy is imbued in the colors and hand-drawn designs that distinguish her work.
Kimberli Burns Cummings found her love for clay at Tampa’s Clay factory in 1990 while healing from a broken marriage. She was immediately given the opportunity to study with many local and internationally recognized potters, such as Paul Soldner, Peter Voulkos (American Modern Masters), Robert Piepenberg, and Rudy Autio (Archie Bray Foundation).
It wasn’t until she met and learned the true art of majolica glaze decoration from Linda Arbuckle that Kimberli found her career path with clay. This technique requires many hours of detail work for fine line quality, using wax and a lot of storytelling. She uses her glazes more like watercolors on a canvas. She was chosen to represent Tampa, Florida on HGTV’s National TV show; “That’s Clever!” teaching the audience how she creates her ‘Tango Dancer’ vase.
In 2016, Kimberli earned a Hillsborough County Individual Arts Council grant providing a chance to convert a portion of her home into a full-time working clay studio.
Her work is collected by many in Spain, France, England, and the U.S. Past showings at the Museum of Fine Art and at the Tampa Museum of Art have kept Kimberli happily covered in clay, telling stories using her garden and beach walks as inspiration.
