About William

William Carlie’s jewelry is hand forged and constructed using the techniques and hand tools he learned to use during a classic apprenticeship to Master Goldsmith, who was trained in Europe during the 1930s. He has added some more modern innovations to these skills such as the fold forming techniques extensively explored and added to jewelry making in the 1960s and 1970s.

His work often features natural stone lapidary, stones which are often personally cut. The materials used, such as jaspers, agates, jade, lapis, hematite and many more, have a long history in jewelry design, as recent as their extensive use in the Art Deco period. His work explores these traditional materials to bring them into a modern design context. Carlie uses “marriage of metals” techniques with karat gold, copper, red brass, and bronze to add color, texture, and graphic elements to the forged sterling background. This combination of materials can bring a depth to the palette, pattern, and texture that can be challenging, while very rewarding to achieve. He particularly enjoys bringing a piece forward from raw stone and artistic concept through the cutting, forging, construction, and finishing processes to fully realize the original vision.
